Mahama's campaign song rings on Akua Donkor’s phone at EC

The mobile phone ringtone of the farmer-turned-politician and founder of the Ghana Freedom Party, Madam Akua Donkor, appears to lend credence to claims that she is a disguised associate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Although she has over the years admitted her admiration for President John Mahama who is the flag-bearer of the NDC, she has however rejected claims of her party’s linkage to the NDC.

But on Friday, Madam Akua Donkor shocked a gathering of political party representatives and executives at the Electoral Commission’s headquarters in Accra when her mobile phone loudly rang with a political song of the NDC.

She had used what appears to be a campaign song of the NDC as her mobile phone ringtone.

The song, Dumsor is Dead, which was composed by Michael Adangba for the NDC, touts how President Mahama has managed to ‘end Ghana’s years of electricity crisis’ that his predecessors failed to do.

The use of the song by Madam Akua Donkor surprised the executives and representatives of the various parties who gathered at the Commission for the launch of an electoral manual for party candidates and their agents.

The development reignited the issue of credibility of the female politician who recently claimed President Mahama gave her two vehicles and a three-bedroom home; something that triggered hue and cry among some Ghanaians.

When contacted Madam Akua Donkor, justified the use of the song as her ringtone, explaining that President Mahama is her son hence there is nothing wrong to use a song touting his achievement.

She further said her use of that song clearly demonstrate the peace and unity Ghanaians have been preaching among all political parties ahead of this year’s December 7 general elections. According to her, GFP is hinged on peace and love.

She was, however, quick to add that the development will not in anyway affect her party’s fortunes of her GFP in the elections, saying, “we will come to power”.

Madam Akua Donkor is one of 23 people who have so far picked up nomination forms to contest in the presidential elections. They are to return the filled forms with a filing fee of GHC50,000.

Although most political parties have described the fees as exorbitant and want the EC to reduce it, Madam Akua Donkor has said it is okay and willing to pay.
