The Ghana National Association of Teachers has described as unfortunate, President John Dramani Mahama’s unilateral decision not to restore the scrapped allowances for trainee teachers.

The scrap of the allowances in 2014 triggered protests by many people, especially the teacher trainees but President Mahama has maintained he will not succumb to pressure, noting he prefers to lose the elections than to restore the allowance.

Government claimed the payment of the allowance was having “huge cost implication for the national budget” and also caused it to scale down the number of students intake through the imposition of what we call the quota system.

Addressing students of the Cape Coast University last week, President Mahama claimed the withdrawal of the allowance has increased enrollment at the various colleges of education nationwide.

But the General Secretary of GNA, David Ofori Acheampong, says the president could have allowed for broader consultations before making the statement.

He said one of the reasons given for the withdrawal of the allowance was that facilities were going to be expanded to take more trainee teachers but noted that has not been done.

“The reason they gave was that they wanted to expand the facilities and as I speak to you now no facility has been expanded in any College of Education. Even as I speak to you today, there is a problem with the final years who are supposed to come out next year,” Mr Acheampong said.

Speaking to TV3’s Daniel Opoku, he denied claims by President Mahama that enrollment has increased since the cancellation of the training allowances.

They introduced the Free Maternal Healthcare, National Health Insurance Scheme, National Youth Employment Programme, School Feeding, Metro Mass Transit, Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty. They paid the teacher training allowances and the nurse training allowances, all from the GHC 20 billion. Within the eight years of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), they have had GHS248 billion but have collapsed the NHIS, the National Youth Employment programme, School Feeding Programme, Metro Mass Transit, nurse training and teacher training allowances. WHICH OF THESE PARTIES HAS HELPED GHANA?

Why is there no Toll Booth on the 140 Km Alsphatic Fufulso-Sawla Road? Is it because the road leads to Prez Mahama's hometown? Is this not contrary to the national road policy? Why is Prez Mahama permitting this treachery? The Accra-Kumasi road is about 200 Km yet has 3 Toll Booths. The Accra-Aflao Road is less than 200Km and also has 3 Toll Booths. What about the Accra-Aburi Road? The road is less than 50Km and yet has a Toll Booth. By using the National Road Standard for siting toll booths the Fufulso-Sawla road should have had at least 2 Toll Booths but nay, there is no single toll booth on that stretch of road 3years after its construction and Mahama is happy with that. This same Mahama will later turn around to say that there is no money to employ teachers and nurses and later go and borrow money at high interest rate to construct roads. So we now have official lying in Ghana where government official lie through their teeth without blinking their eyes. What good lessons are we teaching our future generation? It means the suspicion Ghanaians have that Prez Atta Mills might have been strangled and allowed to struggle and die in the bucket of a pick-up truck might be true.
