The Flag Bearer of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP), Madam Akua Donkor, has petitioned the government to make Wednesday, December 7, 2016, the day Ghanaians will go to the polls, a holiday.

She explained that the move would enable more Ghanaians, especially formal employees and students, to cast their votes since they would not have to go to work or school.

At a press conference in Accra, Madam Akua Donkor said failure to declare the Election Day a holiday would disenfranchise a number of electorates and prevent them from performing their civic responsibility.

The Minister of the Interior, Prosper Douglas Bani, had earlier announced that the Election Day would not be a holiday.

A subsequent notice by the Ghana Education Service to educational institutions affirmed the minister’s statement.

Support

Madam Akua Donkor has, however, declared her support for the incumbent president and the ruling National?Democratic Congress (NDC).

Although she described her disqualification as unfortunate, she said she would not waste her vote and that of her numerous supporters.

“I pledge my unflinching support for President?Mahama and the NDC. I urge all Ghanaians to vote massively for him and his government on December 7 to enable him to usher in more development projects and programmes,” she said.

She urged the electorate to take into consideration the numerous infrastructure developments which had been undertaken by the current government.

Enumerating some of the development projects, she named construction of school blocks across the country, hospitals, roads among many others.

Detractors

She blamed some officials of the EC and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for masterminding her disqualification from the presidential race.
