Manifestos sidelined churches - Christian Council

The Christian Council of Ghana (CCG) has raised concerns about the lack of attention given to issues affecting churches in the country by political parties in their 2016 manifestos ahead of the 7 December polls.

According to the council, challenges facing mission schools, Christian hospitals and universities must not be taken for granted since Christians contribute significantly towards the development of the country.

“We provide employment – look at the number of people that work in churches [and other Christian establishments]. So what we are asking is we also have issues with what we do. We have issues in our universities, we have issues in our hospitals, and what we are saying is, we have realised after studying their various manifestos, which we commend [them for] what they are doing, we feel that because of our contribution to employment, to education, to health and other things, at least, the various political parties and their manifestos must respond to the interest of religious bodies,” the General Secretary of the Council, Rev Dr Kwabena Opuni Frimpong, told Class News.

He added: “Of course, we are aware of the Zongo Development Fund, SADA and others. While we recommend all of them for stating these things, we feel that there are other deprived communities that must be responded to and again because of the significant contribution that the churches and the other religious bodies contribute, at least our concerns should not be ignored.”
