Manual for managing school libraries outdoored

Ghana Library Authority has outdoored a library management manual as part of its efforts to instill a reading culture among young people in Ghana in the year of Reading.

Giving a background to the manual, The Acting Executive Director of Ghana Library Authority, Mr Hayford Siaw, revealed that a research conducted by the Ministry of Education, British Council and Ghana Library Authority during Prime Minister Busia’s era on why Ghanaians are not reading, concluded that, school libraries should be developed as integral part of the nation’s education agenda to instill a culture of reading and lifelong learning as part of their recommendation.

Mr Siaw said ‘’unfortunately, the nation has paid lip service, but an opportunity has presented itself through the instrumentality of the Minister of Education, Hon Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh for the country to be restored back on to the trajectory of enhanced quality education through an efficient library system’’

The launch which occurred on the sidelines of the ongoing training programme of SHS Librarians in Ashanti Region, is part of the series of efforts by the Ghana Library Authority to equip school library managers to effectively manage the facility and the resources entrusted in their care for the benefit of both teachers and students.

The Board Chairperson of the Ghana Library Authority Board, Dr Helena R. Asamoah-Hassan who performed the launch of the manual, encouraged stakeholders to make use of it as we systematically work together to improve a culture of reading and lifelong learning in the country.
