Minority MPs clash over Afoko, Agyepong ‘interdiction’ statement

Some minority MPs have distanced themselves from the statement signed by their leadership asking the beleaguered chairman and general secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Paul Afoko and Kwabena Agyepong respectively, to step aside.

A statement signed by the minority leader Osei Kyei Mensa-Bonsu on Wednesday said the caucus after a careful consideration of the happenings in the party has come to the conclusion that the two executives must leave their posts.

“That in the circumstances, the two national officers be requested, in the interest of peace, unity, trust and stability in the party, to step aside to allow for an impartial investigation into these matters especially the gruesome murder of Mr Adam Mahama, the Upper East Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP),” the MPs said in a resolution to the Council of Elders of the party.

But speaking to Starr News’ Parliamentary correspondent Kobby Mensah Gomez, leader of the dissenting minority caucus Kwame Asafu-Adjei said the statement was “cooked up” by their leadership without their consent.

The Danquah-Busia-Dombo tradition is in a state of confusion as seven regional branches have called for the resignation of its national chairman Afoko and general secretary Agyepong.

The two executives are being accused of masterminding the killing of the party’s Upper East regional chairman Adams Mahama and causing division in the party.
