More than GH¢1.34 million was imposed as court fines on offending motorists for various traffic offences in 2016, statistics from the National Road Safety Commission (NRSC) has revealed.
Out of the total fine GH¢1.33 was paid, representing 99 per cent of the total amount.
Motor traffic offence cases reported in 2016 stood at 5,098 showing an 11.5 per cent decrease from the 5,763 recorded in 2015.
The number of cases sent to court decreased from 4,288 in 2015 to 4,016 in 2016 with the Greater Accra recording the highest of 1,478 and the Northern region recording one.
In 2016, there were 3,347 convictions, 44 were jailed and 75 discharged.
As at the end of last year, 383 cases were awaiting trial, 542 were under investigation, 196 bench warrants issued and 537 warning letters given
