Mumuni Safua, the mother of a newborn baby allegedly stolen from One Heart Clinic in Tamale
Mumuni Safua, the mother of a newborn baby allegedly stolen from One Heart Clinic in Tamale, has recounted how her child was taken from the facility under suspicious circumstances shortly after delivery.
According to her account, she went into labour the day before the incident and successfully delivered her baby.
After spending some time in the hospital recovering, she said she felt the need to use the washroom and briefly stepped out, leaving her baby in the care of people around her.
The mother who spoke in Dagbani language which has been translated, explained that when she returned, she was informed that a woman believed to be a nurse had taken the baby, claiming she wanted to check the baby’s weight.
Safua said she waited patiently for the baby to be returned but after a long delay, she became worried and decided to go to the room where the baby was supposedly being weighed.
“When I went there, the nurses told me none of them had taken any baby to check the weight,” she said.
She explained that she then returned to the people who had been watching the baby, who told her the woman who took the child claimed she was a nurse but was not wearing a nurse’s uniform.
According to them, the woman was dressed in ordinary clothes and had a noticeable mark on her nose before leaving with the baby.
The alleged theft has thrown residents of the Lamashegu community into shock, drawing large crowds to the private health facility as the family and community members demanded answers from hospital authorities.
An eyewitness corroborated the mother’s account, stating that the unidentified woman entered the delivery area under the pretext of conducting routine checks and left with the newborn without returning.
The baby’s father, Baba Shaibu, described the moment he learned of the disappearance as traumatic.
Speaking in a JoyNews interview, he said he received a call around 1:15 a.m. informing him of the successful delivery. He explained that one of his wives, who works at the hospital, helped purchase medicines and injections required for the baby before discharge.
However, hours later, he received a distress call.
