While it is yet unclear who will lead the NDC as flagbearer for the 2020 elections, what MyNewsGh.com is highly certain about is that God has a big role to play in it.
This is according to former President John Dramani Mahama who over the weekend in Kumasi, among other things said: “God will choose NDC Flagbearer”, and perhaps well aware of the God factor, a contender for the flagbearership slot Joshua Alabi declared himself as “Chosen by God [already]” lead the NDC and “make Ghana a Switzerland”.
“I am a Ghanaian and I love my country and God tells me it is time for me to come and lead my country, transform it and make it the Switzerland of Africa. Switzerland is a developed country where we have the world’s money and I believe strongly we can make Ghana the Swiss of Africa,” Prof Joshua Alabi the former SSNIT Board Chairman and UPSA VC told CitiFM as MyNewsGh.com then reported.
Former President John Mahama addressing NDC’s Unity Walk over the weekend in Kumasi said:
“God himself will choose someone to lead us. And I know that when that persons is selected, by the grace of God, we will be victorious in the 2020 election.” even as the crowd chanted: “We want you! We want you!”
To run or not to run
On his future, John Mahama has been coy. He has directed his focus and asked others to do same, he says, on the ‘reorganization of the NDC’.
He is quoted to have said, “I’ve been focusing on the reorganization and so I have not made any intentions and I said rightly that if I declare that I will run or I won’t run it will have implications for the reorganization. If I say I won’t run, then it means that the number of people who will intensify their activity to become the presidential candidates would increase in tempo.”
“If I say I will run, then it will also have implications on the reorganization exercise because then the focus will be the fact that I say I want to run so that is why I’m doing the things I want to do. As the immediate past leader who led the party into the elections of 2016 and we lost, I have a responsibility to make sure that the party is put back on its feet so that whoever leads it has a very good chance of taking us into victory. And that is my focus at the moment,” he had added.
Prof. Alabi is among the four- if not more- NDC stalwarts who have declared their readiness to lead the party into the 2020 polls.
The others include the 2nd deputy Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin; former CEO of the National Health Insurance Authority; Sylvester Menah and NDC Communicator Stephen Atubiga.
The former President, John Mahama is yet to declare any intention to run or otherwise, but one candidate, Alban Bagbin insists the ‘body language of Mahama shows he wants to run”.
According to Mr. Mahama, his focus at the moment is on contributing towards the party’s restructuring and healing process to make the NDC a stronger force in the elections.
