.. They had 76+17, we have 88 -- K. Agyapong
As speculations in the media over the intended reshuffle of Ministers of State by President John Agyekum Kufuor rage on, the Press Secretary to the President, Mr Kwabena Agyapong, has debunked opposition assertions that the government of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has more ministers than the National Democratic congress (NDC) had when it was in national administration.

He said, even though the NPP, at present, has 88 ministers of state including deputies that of the NDC far exceeded 88. It therefore cannot be true that the NPP has more ministers, he affirmed.

At the media briefing at the Castle yesterday, Mr Kwabena Agyapong disclosed that, apart from the regular 76 ministers and deputies the NDC also had other category of ministers who are always left out when the issue of the relative numbers of ministers is under discussion.

Mr Kwabena Agyapong explained that, during the NDC?s eight-year administration there were 17 other ministers of state who doubled as Presidential Staffers and had their offices at the Castle, the seat of the executive.

According to the Presidential Press Secretary, those 17 ministers of state also enjoyed the full benefits as well as service conditions available to sector ministers under the two NDC regimes.

Eighty-eight Ministers may sound more to one?s ears but they are far less than what the NDC had during its regime,? the Press Secretary to President Kufuor re-affirmed yesterday.

Mr Agyapong made those disclosures in an answer to a question on whether President Kufuor would consider trimming down the number of his ministers since it is the largest in the country?s political history.

?There have been a lot of speculations over Cabinet reshuffle but we have to allow the President to do his work,? Mr Kwabena Agyapong urged.

Speculations were rife last week that President Kufuor was going to reshuffle his ministers, a news item that sent shivers down the spines of some ministers and deputy ministers over the weekend.
