Kennedy Agyapong, a 2024 flagbearer hopeful of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has officially announced his decision to contest again for the position in the 2028 presidential election.

Speaking in an interview with UTV, the former Member of Parliament for Assin Central also announced his withdrawal from the party’s ongoing Thank You Tour, citing the stabbing of one of his supporters.

“Everything I need to do to help the party, and everything I need to enhance my chances — I am taking this opportunity to tell you that I am going to contest. I will contest, and they should be ready. Whatever they want to do, nobody can stop me from contesting because we have built this party for a long time,” he stated.

Despite expressing grievances over the stabbing of his supporter, Agyapong committed to maintaining unity within the party, noting that the NPP, now more than ever, needs to be united to recapture power.

“Even if you bring Jesus Christ, without unity, we can’t win,” he said.

The NPP, having suffered a significant defeat in the 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections, has embarked on a Thank You Tour led by the party’s December 7, 2024, flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

However, Kennedy Agyapong said it has become necessary for him to back out of the tour to protect his supporters, following the stabbing incident involving one of his supporters.

Meanwhile, there have been conflicting reports about the events that led to the stabbing.

The Ghana Police Service has, however, yet to comment on the matter.
