New voters' registration exercise progressing steadily in Bia East

The new voters registration exercise being conducted by the Electoral Commission (EC), is progressing smoothly in the Bia East Constituency of the Western North Region.

The 38-day exercise commenced on Tuesday, June 30 in some 6,788 clusters made up of five registration centres each across the country.

It is being conducted in 5 phases, each phase spanning 6 days with additional days for mop-up.

The nationwide exercise is expected to end on August 6, 2020.

The Western North Region has nine (9) Constituencies and the exercise is currently on-going peacefully.

In Bia East Constituency, the exercise is being conducted in eight, out of 74 registration centres in the first phase.

The eight registration centers are Donkorkrom, Ahenboboano A and B, Mosi Hene, Sefwi Adabokrom PBC A and B, Church of Christ A and B at Sefwi Adabokrom.

At the end of day three of the exercise, a total of 2,684 qualified people had been registered.

689 people were registered on the first day with 939 being registered on the second day whilst day three saw 1,056 people registering.

Out of the total registrants, 1,347 are males and 1,337 are females.

Speaking to GhanaWeb after day three of the exercise, Margret Asiedu, the District Director of Electoral Commission for Bia East said the exercise had been without any technical hitches so far.

She, therefore, appealed to eligible voters to get their demographic data captured in the voters register in order to exercise their franchise in the upcoming Presidential and Parliamentary elections slated for December 7, 2020.

Some registrants also expressed their satisfaction with the exercise.

They said the process had been improved on day three as compared to the previous days.

"The process is very good. It took me just about 7 minutes to get my card. This registration process is better than previous years," one applicant shared.

For another "This year's registration exercise is better than 2012. I got my card less in than 7 minutes."

"The process is very smooth. I got my card in less than 5 minutes so I can now go about my daily activities," a third person added.

The Electoral Commission of Ghana has projected to register 16 million qualified Ghanaians for the upcoming Presidential and Parliamentary General Elections slated for December 7, 2020.
