Accra June 18, GNA- Akosombo Textiles Limited (ATL) and Tex Styles (formerly GTP) have released two fabrics to the market in commemoration of the two-day visit to Ghana by Barrack Obama, the 44th President of the US from July 10.
The fabrics released last Friday are being sold at GH¢ 47 for 12 yards while one yard goes for GH¢ 4.50 with a muffler of the two presidents being sold at GH¢1.00.
During a visit to the Central Business District (CBS) of Accra, Ghana News Agency spotted the fabrics on display in a number of shops. The cloth printed by ATL has the portrait of President Obama with inscription "Barrack Obama, 44th President of the United States". It also has the inscription "Akwaaba".
It has blue background with Adinkra symbols as well as yellow spots embossed on it.
That of the GTP, which has a yellow background, has in addition flags of Ghana and the United States, portraits of Professor Evans John Atta Mills and President Obama together with their spouses Michelle Obama and Naadu Mills.
In an interview with Naa Kai, a trader at CBS, she said sale of the fabrics were yet to pick up but she was optimistic that patronage of the cloths would move up as soon as they were advertised.
Comparing the Ghana@50 cloth and those of President Obama's visit, she said when the Ghana@50 cloth was released initially sales were slow, but with time sales shot up.
Meanwhile, Government says it has not contracted or ordered any cloth from any company, be it local or international, towards the historic visit of US President Obama as reported in sections of the media.
Last week there were reports in sections of the media that large quantities of cloth branded in President Barrack Obama, President Mills, and the two first ladies had been produced and would soon be sold to the public.
In a press statement released on Wednesday, Information Minister Zita Okaikoi stated that any of these productions, be they local or international companies, were unknown to the government. She said the government was, however, urging companies and individuals seeking to do any kind of souvenirs towards the visit of the US President to Ghana to seek clearance from the publicity committee of the visit.
The government has announced the formation of four committees with the mandate to make the visit a rare moment in history. The committees, which are to handle security, publicity, protocol and culture, comprise Ghanaian officials and their United States counterparts who have already begun feverish preparations towards the July 10 - 11 visit, the third by a sitting President of the United, States.
