Osu Castle ‘Militia’: Akufo-Addo’s government legalizing illegality – Research Fellow

Despite President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s resolve to disband vigilantism in the country, a Research fellow with the Kumasi Technical University (KTU), Dr. Smith Sarpong has fired a shot at him for what he describes as legalizing an illegality.

“The government is legalizing illegality”, he observed on the back of an exposé an alleged militant group affiliated to the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP); De Eye Group receiving some form of illegal military training at the Osu Castle

According to Dr. Smith Sarpong, who used to work at Osu Castle, it is difficult for someone to have access to such a state security institution let alone for any group to receive illegal military training there.

“When I heard and watched the video, I was shocked and said to myself how can all these happen?”, the Political Social Commentator spoke on Kumasi-based Nhyira FM during panel discussion monitored by MyNewsGh.com.

But the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board has rejected claims that the Osu Castle is a security installation.

According to the board, the facility is instead a museum after its new status was announced by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in 2017.

“On 5th March, 2017, the President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, publicly, declared and inaugurated the Osu Castle as a Presidential Museum of leadership and Governance.”

“The Osu Castle since, this act, above stated, by the President of the Republic, has and to date remained a museum,” a statement signed and issued by the Acting Executive Director of the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board on Monday March 11, 2019 said.
