The Member of Parliament for Ablekuma West, Ursula Owusu Ekuful has described as “surprising” the seeming silence of the Gender Minister, Nana Oye Lithur on the recent rape scandal involving ace broadcaster Kwasi Kyei Darkwah (KKD).

According to the former Vice President of FIDA, Oye Lithur’s comments would have been helpful and reassuring to the alleged victim and other women who have been victims of rape.

KKD is facing trial for allegedly raping a 19-year-old girl, Ewureffe Orleans Thompson at the African Regent Hotel in Accra.

Although Ms. Thompson has in a letter to the Chief Justice withdrawn her interest in the case, State prosecutors are unwavering.

Prosecutor Cynthia Lamptey, told the judge hearing the case that the authenticity of the letter is in doubt.

Commenting on the development on Oman FM, Mrs Ekuful said the Gender Minister and other women advocates must make their opinions known on the matter.

“Maybe she (Oye Lithur) was overwhelmed like I was; but I’m surprised that she has not yet spoken to stop how Ewureffe and her family have been treated by the public.

"And she is not alone, a lot of us have also done the girl and her family a great disservice with our silence," she noted.
