The Deputy Director of public Affairs of parliament, Kate Addo, has debunked media reports that parliament owes the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) over Gh¢1 million, being accumulated electricity bills for the whole of 2013 and 2014.
According to Ms Addo, Parliament alone does not owe ECG the amount, explaining that other government institutions have contributed to the total debt the House has incurred.
Ms Addo, who made this known in reaction to the media reports, said “Parliament does not owe ECG the total GH¢1 million.
Government institutions such as State House, State Protocol Office, Office of the President Annex, and Chieftaincy Ministry, among others, are part of the bill.”
It was reported that last Friday ECG stormed Parliament House to cut power supply to the House as a result of non-payment of electricity bills for a period of two years.
However, the Deputy Director of Public Affairs said officials of ECG had not gone to disconnect power to the House, rather they went to discuss with the Development Director of the House about how they can separate the accumulated bills owed by the various government institutions.
She said, “It is the separation of the bills that has caused the delay in the payment of the bill.”
According to DAILY GUIDE sources, officials of Parliament were shocked at the amount the House owed ECG.
Some were said to have speculated that there was the possibility that some adjourning institutions were using the same meter being used by Parliament.
