The condemnation of the thuggery of the Delta Force by the National Peace Council, the Ghana Bar Association (GBA), and the Coalition of Domestic Election Observers (CODEO) are indications that these organisations are awakening from their slumber, Kofi Portuphy, National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has said.

According to him, these organisations, and others had been rather mute on developments in the country, especially regarding happenings after the 2016 polls.

Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday April 12, he said: “We don’t want to believe that today’s attitude of some clergy and civil society organisations towards the disturbing developments in the political scenes in Ghana is borne out of political or ethnic prejudice or is arising out of hypocrisy and double standards.

“Yes we have heard from the Ghana Bar Association, CODEO, and the Peace Council and others, but only in respect of the mayhem caused by the so-called Delta Force in Kumasi. But where was the Ghana Bar Association, CODEO, Peace Council, etc. when the NPP brought in mercenaries from South Africa to train these terrorist elements? Where was the Peace Council when after the elections these NPP elements attacked, burnt down and, in some cases, took over operations of toll booths at Fiapre in the Brong Ahafo Region and in Tema at the end of the motorway?

“Where was the Ghana Bar Association when those goons beat up police officers and chased them out of their offices? Where was the Peace Council when the NPP-sponsored groups murdered four NDC activists in different parts of the country – the Western, Central and Upper East regions?

“Where was the so-called moral conscience of the civil society when the NPP-sponsored terrorists invaded and attacked former government officials of the NDC on the pretence of searching for government properties? Where were they when these same NPP goons destroyed state properties at the Kwame Nkrumah interchange, raided NADMO head office, raided the Passport Office, National Health Insurance offices and many other offices? Where were they? Anyway we thank God that they have started awakening from their slumber.”
