The District Police Commander for Kwabre East and personnel from the Ashanti Regional Police Command fled for their lives after a failed attempt to stop the violence between some Zongo youth and Ashanti youth at Ahwiaa in the Ashanti Region.

“The Zongo youth attempted to stab the District Commander with a knife and he had to run away”, District Chief Executive (DCE) of the area, Nana Osei Bonsu revealed.

“The youth were so determined to kill everyone who come their way even the police Commander”, the DCE spoke on Kumasi-based Hello Fm Monday.

“It was a pathetic scenario and everyone was alarmed”, Hon. Nana Osei Bonsu added stating that his outfit is ever ready to help police arrest offenders.

Dozens were injured on Saturday, 3rd February 2018, after some Zongo youth and residents of Ahwiaa were involved in bloody clashes.

The fight occurred in the early hours with the factions attacking each other with machetes, broken bottles, and other weapons after the town folks had prevented the Zongo youth from participating in a burial and funeral rites of a deceased lady.

Calm has since returned to the town while the joint military and police personnel are still at the scene to make sure the melee do not spark again.

Meanwhile, The Member of Parliament for Kwabre East, Francisca Oteng-Mensah, is demanding a thorough probe into the clashes between two youth groups

According to her, the cause of the conflict between the two groups cannot be justifiable, hence the need for the security to dig deeper and establish the real cause to be able to address the issues effectively.

“We need to find out what is the root cause of this whole conflict, because if we just leave it at the fact that, it was just a young girl’s funeral and one party was refused from attending the funeral and it started the fight, then I do not think it is right thing,” she said.
