A leading Communication team member of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Ashanti Region, Opoku Mensah Jnr. has lashed out at ex-President John Mahama for ‘sponsoring’ the fake circulation of documents purported to be portions of a curriculum for Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) in basic schools.
In a submission on Kumasi-based Pure FM’s Pure Morning Drive with sit-in host Kojo Marfo, monitored by MyNewsGh.com, the NPP communicator revealed that, the ex-President after coming to terms with President Akufo-Addo’s good governance and his slimming chances of coming back to power has resorted to spewing falsehood and championing propaganda to court public disaffection for the government but unfortunately, it has backfired .
He mocked the former President for not using the medium to tell Ghanaians of his policies and market his sinking party that their founder, Jerry John Rawlings say cannot win the 2020 elections but rather has resorted in ‘machoing’ in propaganda.
Opoku Mensah Jnr advised Ghanaians to disregard the document being circulated by the ‘John Mahama’s apparatchiks’ as the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service have not enrolled any CSE course into the basic school curriculum.
He remarked that, the NPP is keen on protecting the country’s national values and cultural heritage and they are doing so by projecting nation-building ideals in basic, secondary and tertiary institutions.
The ‘planned integration of the Comprehensive Sexuality Education in the basic school curriculum’ has generated news and mixed reactions from the public with some suggesting that the course is a backdoor attempt to introduce children to LGBT issues and accept immoral practices like masturbation as an ideal act.
Others have suggested that the material be limited to pupils in Junior High Schools.
Despite clarification from bodies such as the Ghana Education Service that the curriculum has nothing to do with “LGBT issues, masturbation or explicit display/labeling of intimate body parts” and insisting that the education is meant to inculcate relevant values into pupils, many have vehemently challenged the position, arguing that it is an attempted to propagate sexuality education that does not reflect that values and norms of the Ghanaian society.
Former President John Mahama in adding his voice to the many calls on the government to ditch the proposed CSE guidelines said in a Twitter post sighted by Mynewsgh.com that the government must “respect and uphold the enduring values, norms and the right culture of Ghana” by withdrawing the CSE and focus on improving the quality of education in the country.
“What Ghana urgently needs is a substantial improvement in quality education, which is accessible and affordable to all,” Mahama noted.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Education has clarified and insisted in subsequent media interviews that the curriculum framework approved for basic schools does not include Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE).
Addressing the media in Accra last Tuesday, covered by MyNewsGh.com, the Education Minister, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, noted that “no teacher was trained on Comprehensive Sexuality Education.”
“The curriculum framework from KG to P6 that has been approved by Cabinet from the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NACA) for use in the development of school curriculum and published on NACA website does not include anything on Comprehensive Sexuality Education.”
“NACA has not approved any material on Comprehensive Sexuality Education as it is not included in the published curriculum framework,” the Minister insisted.
