President John Dramani Mahama has endorsed a new SIM card registration exercise, describing the previous nationwide process as ineffective and lacking credibility.

Speaking during the Resetting Ghana Tour in Sunyani in the Bono Region, the President said the earlier exercise imposed significant hardship on citizens without delivering meaningful results.

He attributed the shortcomings to poor coordination between key institutions, particularly the Ministry of Communications and the National Identification Authority, which made it difficult to properly link SIM cards to verified national identity data.

President Mahama explained that the new exercise, being spearheaded by Communications Minister Samuel Nartey George, will be fully integrated with the Ghana Card system to ensure accurate identification of SIM card users.

He added that the new approach will allow users to update their details digitally, eliminating long queues and making the process more convenient.

Meanwhile, the National Communications Authority has revealed that an audit of SIM registration data between 2021 and 2023 recorded zero fingerprint matches when cross-checked with the national identity database, raising concerns about the integrity of the previous system.

The renewed SIM re-registration drive is expected to strengthen digital security, reduce mobile money fraud, and restore public confidence in Ghana’s telecommunications sector.
