Felix Kwakye Ofosu is a Minister of state in charge of Government Communications
The Minister of State in Charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has dismissed claims that President John Dramani Mahama intends to seek a third-term in office, describing the allegations as unfounded and misleading.
His comments follow accusations from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) suggesting that the President is harbouring a hidden plan to extend his tenure beyond the constitutional two-term limit.
The NPP’s claims were fueled by calls from some National Democratic Congress (NDC) supporters on social media urging the President to remain in office beyond the limit.

Speaking in an interview with Accra-based Channel One TV on December 10, 2025, Kwakye Ofosu rejected the claims, insisting that President Mahama has already made his position clear. According to him, the governing party sees no basis for the allegations.
“The NPP have whipped themselves into a needless frenzy. President Mahama has stated emphatically that he will respect the Ghanaian Constitution. Because he’s a consummate democrat, there’s no third term for him or any other person as far as the Constitution is concerned,” he said.
He added that social media calls from individuals cannot be interpreted as government policy or presidential ambition.
“Anyone can say what they want. The fact that some people have gone on Facebook to suggest he should go for a third term doesn’t mean it will happen. The President himself has said he’s not interested,” Felix Kwakye Ofosu said.
He urged the opposition to desist from what he described as needless speculation.

“So the NPP should stop wasting their time—and everybody else’s time—by purporting to be angry. It’s an absurd fantasy they’re getting themselves into. The President has not expressed any intent. Any talk about it is a complete waste of time.”
President Mahama had earlier emphasised his adherence to the two-term limit on August 27, 2025, during a bilateral meeting with Singaporean President Tharman Shanmugaratnam on a three-day state visit.
He stated that he would not be on the ballot in 2028, stressing that stepping aside would support efforts to promote fiscal discipline and address the recurring issue of election-year overspending.
