Prosecute ASP Tanko and Supt. Klomegah - KTI students tell IGP

Teachers and Students body of the Kumasi Technical Institute (KTI) are calling on the government and the Ghana Police Service to prosecute the Ashanti regional SWAT Commander Christopher Klomegah and Public Relations Officer of the police command ASP Mohammed Yusif Tanko following police assault.

Police are reported to have assaulted students of KTI after they won the Inter-schools and colleges competition (Interco) at the stadium.

Supt Klomegah and ASP Tanko have been transferred from the region following the Minister of Education Dr Mathew Opoku Prempeh’s pronouncements on Abusua FM that the two should be sacked or transferred.

The teachers and students who expressed satisfaction about the transfer suggested to the Inspector General of Police (IGP) David Asante-Appeatu to set up a committee to investigate the brutalities whereupon the two will be made to face the full rigours of the law.

They believe investigations into the matter which will bring the police officers who abused their offices to book will serve as a deterrent to others.

Mmrantiehene Wireko Brobbey on Abusua FM’s Abusua Nkommo hosted by Kwame Adinkra, reported that the teachers and students complained that the transfer of the two could not be compared to the police brutalities on their lives.

ASP Tanko is heading to Tamale in the Northern region whiles Supt Klomegah goes to Aveyime district in the Volta region.

‘We are not satisfied that they have been transferred, we are calling on the government and the IGP to institute investigations into the matter, we are not going to allow them to sweep this issue under the carpet,’ they said.

It is still unclear if ASP Tanko and Supt Klomegah were kicked out of the region due to the minister’s pronouncements or otherwise.

Background:

Students and teachers of KTI were brutally assaulted by the police after they had blocked road, pelted stones and smashed police patrol cars.

The police are reported to have rushed to the dormitories of KTI to further assault teachers and students who did not go to the stadium amidst firing of bullets and tear gas.

ASP Tanko had explained that the Police on duty acted in that manner to disperse the students who had engaged in a scuffle with other students.
