Religious leaders have a stake in national development – Dr. Opuni-Frimpong

Former General Secretary of the Christian Council of Ghana, Dr. Kwabena Opuni-Frimpong has called on religious leaders, Christians and muslims as whole to get involved in the economic and social development of the country as they have a role to play.

According to him, sound Christian spirituality must bring faith values and perspectives into matters of good governance, sustainable peace and development.

Every Ghanaian, he said, should contribute to issues of nation building as it is a collective responsibility.

“… we have been called to show concern as far as our national development whether its politics, economics we must show interest. This is the only country,” he said.

Rev Opuni Frimpong was adding his voice to the Chairman of National Peace Council, Prof. Emmanuel Asante, who had earlier said that the role of religious leader goes beyond praying for the nation.

“...and in this nation we don’t need people to tell us that we as Christians should be concerned about this nation that God has given us. If people are doing things that will not help push the nation forward, it is for Christians to have the prophetic responsibility to draw people’s attention to this,” Rev Asante said.

He added that politicians must not think religious people have nothing to offer the country aside praying.

“Christianity has a perspective in the development of our nation, and we must ensure that we have it.”

“Christians who have the capacity to be engaged in the development of the nation, the economic issue, political issue of the nation should not be guard. We have the responsibility to be the salt and the light of this world.” He added.
