Former Ghana goalkeeper Richard Kingson was compelled to make the difficult and uncomfortable decision of picking between two of Ghana’s best central defenders.
Yesterday, Friday June 12 marked exactly fourteen years since a Ghanaian player kicked a ball at the FIFA World Cup.
Germany was the host and Ghana was in Group D alongside Italy, the Czech Republic and the United States of America.
Ghana did not get a Disney ending to its first world cup match as an experienced and star-studded Italian side overcame the Black Stars challenge with a 2-0 victory.
Players and officials who were part of Ghana’s team have been reminiscing about the moment and Olele who was in the post that day has been speaking to Kingdom FM about his experience.
It’s during the discourse that Richard Kingson was made to decide between John Mensah and Sammy Osei Kuffour as his best Ghanaian centre back of all-time.
Quizzed on who he thinks is the best Ghanaian defender in history, Richard Kingson mentioned the two players but was impressed upon to pick one of the two.
Kingson ultimately picked Sammy Kuffour over John Mensah with the backing that he played with the former for a longer period than the man regarded as the ‘Rock of Gibraltar’.
“I have two people and it is between Sammy Kuffour and John Mensah. I started with Sammy Kuffour in 96. It will be difficult to pick between them. I can’t pick one but if you push me, I may go for Kuffour”, he said.
