The Ministry of Energy has been directed to accelerate the pace of its cities and communities lighting programme, in order to light up cities and communities across the country as part of efforts to help fight crime in the country.

The move has become necessary following the surge in crime across the country especially armed robbery attacks.

The Minister of Information and Presidential Spokesperson, Mustapha Abdul-Hamid speaking at a press briefing in Accra on Thursday, 1 March 2018, to address the concerns of citizens on the recent spate of robberies that have occurred across the country said: “the Ministry of Energy has been directed to accelerate the pace of its cities and communities lighting programme, in order to light up our cities and communities especially crime prone areas.”

He noted that government regards the peace and security of the country as the basis for development and will stop at nothing to ensure that Ghanaians are safe and go about their lawful duties in peace and tranquility.

President Akufo-Addo’s spokesperson further encouraged citizens to be vigilant and report suspicious characters in their communities to the law enforcement agencies.
