Minister of Education Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang says secondary education in Ghana has been free as enshrined in the 1992 Constitution.

Students, she says, only pay for extra costs.

“In terms of tuition, [fees] don’t exist,” she said on Saturday, October 25 when she appeared on TV3’s Hot Issues.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang said the constitution demands that secondary education is made progressively free, and that is what government has resolved to do from next year.

She said day students currently enjoy free education but only pay for fees that cover extra costs while boarding schools also pay for feeding fees and the likes.

She, therefore, insisted that Ghana’s poor enrolment may not be because of fees “but other ancillary costs”. “Sometimes, the parents have a role to play,” she said.
