The Minority in Parliament is demanding the immediate replacement of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), David Asante Apeatu.
This follows increasing cases of crime in the country. Their call comes on the back of what some say is the gradual slide of the country into a state of lawlessness with daily reported cases of armed robbery and criminal attacks.
Some parts of the capital city have been placed under self-imposed curfews as residents for fear of suffering attacks; retire to bed as early as 7PM, leaving those streets deserted.
Speaking to Class News on the recent cases of crime, Minority Chief Whip, Ahmed Ibrahim placed the blame at the doorstep of the IGP, saying he lacked innovative ideas to tackle crime. He told Parliamentary correspondent, Ekow Annan that the IGP has no business in office in the face of heightened crime.
“There is something wrong with the top hierarchy of the police and who is at the top? It is the IGP. So, clearly if he is due for retirement and you give him contract and he is not performing the president must let the IGP go,” he stated.
Meanwhile, government has allayed fears of the citizenry and is urging all to go about their normal duties without any fear.
This assurance from the Interior Ministry Ambrose Dery comes at a time, some residents of Accra are lamenting the state of insecurity.
Mr Dery noted that the safety of Ghanaians remain paramount to the President saying a process has begun to retool the Ghana Police Service.
He also defended the number of Ministers and appointees in charge of security in the country.
Some critics have criticised President Akufo-Addo for appointing more than seven Ministers in charge of the security portfolio of the country.
But Mr Dery insists all of them are playing specific roles and complimenting each other. He also wants the public to have utmost faith in the ability of the police service to curtail crime.
