The Volta Regional Security Council (REGSEC) has assured it is on high alert over the threat by the Homeland Study Group Foundation (HSGF) to carry out its action of restoring Western Togoland as an independent state from Ghana.
Leaders of the group were arrested last Sunday after meeting to make the declaration on Thursday, May 9, 2019.
The Chairman of the REGSEC, Dr Archibald Yao Letsa, said a combined team of police and military officers has been stationed at the strategic points in towns and cities to ensure such action does not occur.
The Volta Regional Minister gave the assurance in an interview with Onua FM’s Yen Sempa on Wednesday.
The eight people including the Chairman, Charles Kormi Kudzodzi, were picked up in Ho and airlifted to Accra after their arrest.
They are expected to appear before court in Accra on Wednesday, May 8.
Sunday’s arrest was the second time members of the group have been arrested in a similar fashion.
They were charged two years ago for treason.
The group says it is not perturbed by the arrest of its chairman and seven other leaders and warned that whatever they had planned to carry out on Thursday, May 9 will happen despite the arrests.
Dr. Yao Letsa said at the moment, the security is on the ground in the towns and villages to ensure that members of the group who were not arrested do not carry out their intended declaration.
