Dr. Sekou Nkrumah has supported a suggestion that Ghanaian presidents be made to hold office for a non-renewable seven-year term.

According to the last son of Ghana’s first president Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, such a system will give presidents and their governments enough time to roll out and implement their policies.

Dr. Sekou Nkrumah says the current dispensation of four-year renewable terms does not bode well for Ghana’s democracy and development.

He believes a seven-year term will also reduce the four-yearly political tension in the country.

He told XYZ Breakfast Show host Moro Awudu on Monday that in that case, a president’s party can run for the presidency but with a totally new candidate.

As far as he is concerned, considering the fact that Ghana’s political experience, since 1992, has been that parties get a maximum of two four-year terms, amending the Constitution to make Presidents run for just a longer term makes better sense.
