That idea from Sekou is being practiced right now in some South American countries and Russia. More importantly one term does not mean one cannot come back to compete again after somebody has come after him. So you see Vladimir Putin served as president, one term, as the Russian president, handed over to Dmitry Medvedev, who also served one term, only for Putin to come back again as president after shifting to prime minister. He just flipped and exchanged roles with Medvedev. In Argentina, the president just handed over to his wife with the intent to come back after the wife. He passed away before the wife could finish her term.

Why should Ghana put herself through such shenanigan? The problem with Sekou's idea is, if somebody is messing up with the economy, you want to give the people early enough chance to stop the damage, before it had become permanent or irreversible. A seven-year term could also create such an entrenchment opportunity for an incumbent party, they may corrupt the system to such a point, and you would not be able to change them. No, let's stick to the present system and consider the four years as a half-time period to make some changes or keep with the same players for a second 4-year term.

Both the NDC and NPP have tasted power, so therefore, the often mentioned argument that a new government wastes about a whole year to get its players in position and shape, is an excuse for tardiness. An opposition party should have its shadow ministers in position to spring into action as soon as they are given the mandate to rule. A president shouldn't waste his/her first year filling all national, regional and district positions as well as filling boards of corporations with his cronies. We should elect directly all MMDCEs as well as Regional ministers. No more the cronyism of filling 30 % of district assemblies with president appointees. That is how we waste a whole year trying to set up and get a government going.

The Speaker of Parliament, and all MPS should do the same.The Directors of the various ministries, heads of government agencies, The Inspector General of Police and his Commanders in the various Regions, The Chief of Staff, Army, Navy, Air Force Commanders should all declare their assets and deposited with the Auditor General, and updated every four years. The Chairmen/Women & General Secretaries of the various Parties should do the same, and updated every four years so that any unreasonable acquisition would have to be justified. The Chief Justice, Supreme Court Justices, Appeals Court Justices, High Court Judges, Circuit Court judges, and Magistrates in the Districts should all do the same.

Corruption and misuse of power, that is all. Prior to Medvedev, Putin had spent 2 terms in office, just as former president Jeltsin

In Argentina, the term in office is 4 years just as in Ghana, and yes renewable!

No country practice what this kwasia is proposing.

I find that four years in office could be longer, perhaps 5 like in France. That would give the person in office better time to learn how to be a president. In the US it is said that it takes 2 years to get to know the system. When those 2 years are done people begin to talk election. But if a president did not have the possibility to be reelected, why do anything good for the country? He would not be rewarded.

The worst of it, is that they don't even know you let alone recognizing you. Now they are looking for safe place for their family. Be wise and let's accept whatever verdict reached by supreme court.

Any straight-headed fellow who is honest could use effectively ONLY four years to attain his target; a foolish leader would use his whole life without achieving anything. 19 years of JJR and the corruption didn't stop. I, for one side with his proposal. Ghana and for that matter the rest of Africa should not practice democracy EXACTLY as our colonial masters do because 1) We are not economically self-sufficient to run an election every 4 years. All that cost in running an election could be directed to fixing our bad roads, for example. 2) As far as looting state coffers is concerned, we must devise measures such as assets declaration before and after office and make this policy work! 3) We should modify democracy to fit our economical and social environment and not just copy and paste...this is what is killing us in Ghana in particular, not just political terms but anything from the West. We don't have the necessary infrastructures, but insisting on running things like the West such as online courses when internet connectivity would just suddenly cut off...or electricity goes out w/o any warning. Ask anyone in the U.S or U.K when the last time was when there was lights-off?...probably just a reset once every God knows when!
Running elections every 4 years as the West does is NOT economically wise for us to simply copy. Sekou Nkrumah is not sick or mad. His proposal is ideal for a young and novice practicing democratic country like Ghana.

Just a few months ago. Abdoulaye Wade, the former President of Senegal finished his second term, which was made up of two five year terms, and yet after 10 years, he still wanted more.

Let us build the institutions and Ghana will be fine irrespective of who leads or how long he leads.

The idea that if presidents of Ghana are given seven years, they can "roll out and implement their policies" is shallow.

Why seven years and not eight or nine or ten years?

Ghanaians must understand that "the Government" as an institution NEVER ends. We change the players but Ghana Government continues.

If one batch of elected people finish their term of elected office, another is elected to continue where that batch left off.

WE MUST STOP TREATING "THE LAST GOVERNMENT" AS IF IT WAS NOT PUT IN PLACE BY GHANAIANS.

NEW GOVERNMENTS MUST ALSO STOP ABANDONING THE PROJECTS OF PREVIOUS GOVERNMENTS SIMPLY BECAUSE MEMBERS OF THOSE PREVIOUS GOVERNMENTS ARE IDEOLOGICALLY DIFFERENT FROM THE NEW GOVERNMENT.

Once we see the concept of "Government" as a continuous institution, the call for seven or longer years will become irrelevant.

To hold the president accountable, I will also propose that members of parliament be elected for one 6 year term like the president with half of them facing relection during the third year of the president (mid-term). This will make all the parties responsible and accountable to the electorate. The thought of the president losing his majority in parliament during his mid term is enough to stop the political gamesmanship.

At least within 4 years, people should be confident enough to predict what the next 4 would be based on what was done/achieved in the first 4. Almost a year gone in our case..let's start counting the progress that has been achieved. Things that were in place have been scrapped and what we see are people lining their pockets with no oversight because the top is doing thesame. 7 years? No way. Let's try listening, thinking and suggesting for good changes, with sense. That might help our progress. It may also move us in the right direction. If things start to go bad, they will quickly ran abroad because they have prepared places for such eventuality.
