Senior Housemaster grabbed for extortion at Dadieso SHS

DAILY GUIDE has gathered that the senior housemaster of Dadieso Senior High School (SHS) in the Western Region, Akpor Adjei, is in the grips of the police for allegedly extorting money from the first year students, contrary to the government’s ‘Free SHS’ policy.

According to sources, the district chief executive (DCE) for the area, Christian Baah, arrested him and handed him over to the police after Mr Adjei had purportedly admitted committing the offence.

There have been reports of extortions in second cycle institutions, particularly in the northern parts of the Western Region, since the implementation of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government’s flagship ‘Free SHS’ policy began last week.

Confirming the arrest to DAILY GUIDE in an interview, Mr Christian Baah noted that the free SHS admissions in the Dadieso District started very well last week Monday.

“But on Thursday, I received so many calls from some parents whose children had gained admissions to Dadieso SHS, alleging that they were being asked to pay an amount GH¢150.00 each for certain items to be supplied to the new entrants,” he disclosed.

The DCE added, “So on Friday I went to the school to investigate the matter and I realized it was true that the senior housemaster was taking some unapproved fees from the parents.”

“After gathering the information, I confronted the headmaster of the institution and he denied knowledge of the alleged move by the senior housemaster and so I arrested Mr Akpor Adjei and handed him over to the police for further investigations,” he maintained.

Efforts to reach other authorities in the school for their comments were not successful.

Meanwhile, some parents in the area have applauded the swift manner with which the DCE tackled the issue.



According to them, it would serve as a deterrent to like-minded SHS authorities.

“Some school heads should stop sabotaging this good initiative by President Nana Akufo-Addo. This is a policy that would bring great blessing to this country and so those trying to draw us back are enemies of the people,” a parent pleaded.

The arrest of the Dadieso senior housemaster follows the education ministry’s reported dismissal of two headmasters and the interdiction of nine others for allegedly extorting monies from students.

Names of the sacked headmasters are Wisdom Blazu and Rev. S.P Eleworkor, headmaster and assistant headmaster of Pentecost SHS and Daffour SHS respectively.
