Sexuality Education: ‘We’re treading on dangerous path’ – Prof Alabi

A former Vice Chancellor of the University of Professional Studies(UPSA), Prof. Joshua Alabi, has advised the Government to be more careful about how it relates to groups that have the tendency to influence the country to adopt Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) rights as part of Ghana’s culture.

He believes majority of Ghana’s population is made of Christians and Moslems whose doctrines frown on LGBT, hence the need for the Akufo-Addo government to listen to Ghanaians who have always kicked against such rights.

Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) is to be introduced into Ghana’s basic schools’ curriculum by 2020 – drawing a lot of controversies in the country.

Ghana and the United Nations Education, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) launched the CSE programme this year in a bid to empower adolescents and young people to deepen their scope of existing activities to attain a Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE).

From next year, pupils in all public schools, including 4-year-olds will be taught on CSE. Some portions of the supposed curriculum that have gone viral on social media has, among other things, captured how to teach pupils to use both male and female condoms and also uphold the rights to retain or change their gender.

However, Officials say the subject content would be age-appropriate, so the toddlers would be empowered with values that would protect them from sexual harassment.

The Ghana Education Service says the CSE has not been approved for schools in the country yet, but Professor Alabi fears there could be clandestine efforts to get Ghanaians accept LGBT rights.



Speaking with TV XYZ News, the renowned educationist said he had followed the subject and hastened, whether or not the CSE consist of content that will subtly get pupils to appreciate LGBT rights, the Akufo-Addo administration should know that majority of Ghanaians frown on those rights and movements.

“Leaders of the country should listen to what the people are saying…During our time, Prof. Atta Mills was emphatic that we will not accept those rights. The Christians and Moslems don’t believe in that. We must be strong and be careful… wherever the pressure is coming from we should be strong,” he stated.

The failed presidential aspirant of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) said the LGBT communities have targeted Ghana, stressing that its consequences would be dire once it is embraced.

“We’re treading on a dangerous path. Christians are saying no and the Moslem are saying no, why do you say it’s bound to happen? Are you going to change the Bible or quran?, “he added.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Education has said “No special sessions have been organized or will ever be organized by the GES to train students as advocates for sexual rights, let alone LGBT rights which are culturally, socially, legally, morally and religiously alien to Ghana.”

In a statement signed by GES PRO, Cassandra Twum Ampofo Monday, she indicated that the CSE programme has not been approved yet for schools in the country.
