Small Arms C’ssion to reduce weapons demand ahead of polls

The Executive Secretary of the Small Arms Commission, Mr. Jones Aplerh says his outfit will limit the demand for weapons drastically ahead of the November polls.

“As security watchers our short term measure to gun control is how we can drive down the demand. We are in an election year; and we all know what happens in Africa when countries are going through elections. How political opponents want to gain advantage over each other.”

Police in recent times have intercepted huge cache of guns and other ammunition which were in transit to neighbouring countries through Ghana, a situation which has heightened fears in the country.

The development of gun movement has been a source of worry for many security experts, especially as Ghana goes to the polls in November.

In an interaction with Fiifi Banson on Anopa Kasapa on Kasapa 102.3 FM, Jones said the wave of gun movement in recent times have been an eye opener.

He claimed management of the stockpile is weak in Ghana.

“The proliferation of arms has become a challenge mostly because some of the officials are corrupt, while weapons that are not meant for civilians leak from state security armories all over Africa.”

But has assured of the commitment of the commission to get a handle of the situation and curtail the demand to the barest minimum.
