The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has been decorated with the Mahatma Gandhi Award for World Unity.

The prestigious award was bestowed upon Bagbin in recognition of his contributions to global unity and peace.

According to a statement signed by Parliament’s Director of Media Relations, David Sebastian Damoah, Bagbin was honored during the 26th International Conference of Chief Justices of the World (ICCJW).

“In a further testament to his global iconic status as a champion of good governance, peace building and international diplomacy, the Speaker of Parliament, Rt Hon Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has been decorated with the Mahatma Gandhi Award for World Unity.

“This worldwide accolade was donned on the Rt. Hon. Bagbin at the 26th International Conference of Chief Justices of the World (ICCJW) which took place in Lucknow, India from 19th to 24th November 2025,” portions of the statement read.

It added that Bagbin was honored by the organisers for “his unwavering support of children’s appeal for world unity and peace, and for a safe and secure future for over 2.5 billion children worldwide and generations yet to be born.”

The Project Leader of ICCJW, Prof Sandeep Srivastava, in presenting the award, highlighted the Speaker’s commitment to a peaceful world and his dedication to safeguarding the rights of children from war torn countries.

The 26th ICCJW was convened to address escalating global conflicts, climate-induced crises, and fractured governance.

According to the UNHCR Global Trends Report for 2024, more than 123.2 million people were displaced worldwide due to conflicts that year.

The Conference resolved that the world urgently requires a renewed framework for collective security, noting that the United Nations could draw inspiration from Article 51 of the Indian Constitution.

This provision advocates for the promotion of international peace and security, the maintenance of just and honorable relations, respect for international law, and the settlement of disputes through arbitration.

In addition, several world leaders were recognized and honored for their contributions to global peace and unity.
