The Gbese Stool, under the leadership of Paramount Chief Nii Ayi Bonte II, has issued a stern warning to displaced traders at the Kantamanto Market, cautioning them against erecting wooden structures on the land following the recent fire outbreak.
Speaking at a press conference on Saturday, January 4, 2024, Nii Ayi Bonte II firmly stated that the land is not government property but belongs to the Gbese Stool, asserting their legal claim to the area.
“The land has an owner, so no one should take the law into their own hands and build any wooden structures. We will not accept this attitude anymore. That is why we are having this press conference, to inform everyone that we are bringing in investors from April to redevelop the area," he declared.
He emphasised plans to partner with investors to develop the area, warning that unauthorised rebuilding activities would not be tolerated.
He further announced the formation of a task force to oversee the removal of unapproved structures and ensure compliance with the directive.
“We are cautioning anyone who has put up any structures without our permission to take them down because we will be sending a task force to the grounds to ensure that no illegal structures are erected,” he stated.
The devastating fire, which struck in the early hours of January 2, 2025, left the Kantamanto Market in ruins, displacing many traders and destroying countless livelihoods.
