James Agbey is the leader of National Democratic Congress (NDC) Action Movement
A leading figure within the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Action Movement, James Agbey, has cautioned party leadership and government officials against imposing candidates as the party looks beyond President John Mahama.
According to a report by myjoyonline.com on March 21, 2026, Agbey called for an immediate end to what he described as ‘nasty factionalism’ within the party, warning that internal divisions could undermine the NDC’s democratic credentials.
He expressed concern about rising tensions among competing groups, noting that various campaign camps are already forming and quietly positioning themselves ahead of the party’s presidential primaries.
Agbey warned that the contest is shaping up to be a fierce and potentially divisive internal battle, with observers predicting a high-stakes primary.
While commending Mahama for pledging not to interfere in the selection of his successor, he cautioned that the actions of some party and government officials could still tilt the playing field unfairly.

He stressed that no aspirant should be disadvantaged through the misuse of state or party structures, insisting that all candidates must be given equal opportunity.
“To achieve true internal party democracy, party leaders, government officials and public agencies must appear neutral,” he stated, adding that a party that stands for equity must demonstrate it in practice.
Agbey further urged party faithful and delegates to uphold transparency and fairness, describing them as ‘the most sophisticated electors’ capable of protecting the integrity of the process.
He also called on factions within the party to unite and avoid internal rancour, warning that bitterness could weaken the NDC ahead of the 2028 general elections.
Drawing comparisons, he argued that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) suffered setbacks in the 2024 elections due to alleged candidate imposition and disregard for grassroots voices.
Agbey maintained that the NDC must lead by example as a democratic and progressive party, emphasising that its future depends on unity, fairness, and a transparent leadership transition process.
