Former Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Prof. Mike Ocquaye has damned government’s intension to sell the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

He accused government of employing knee-jerk approach in addressing the electricity crises, adding that, the sale of ECG is never a panacea to the crises.

He is convinced that the ECG is not responsible for the crises since it is just the distributor of the energy it receives from the producers.

According to him, government is using the power crises as a means of selling the strategic state institution to private hands for its benefits.

Prof Ocquaye noted government’s negligence of the role of the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) in the management of Ghana's crude oil.

Speaking on Okay FM, Prof Ocquaye questioned the rationale for allowing TOR to deteriorate while it imports finished petroleum products which come at a higher cost to the country.

‘...Strategic partner with energy expertise in revenue mobilisation is what the ECG needs to deliver on its core mandate, and not [to sell it]," he said.

This he said, could be done through an IT innovation for efficiency.
