Students in Danger: Viral video captures galamsey activities around Abomosu STEM SHS

A concerned parent has raised alarm over illegal mining activities, widely known as galamsey, taking place just metres from Abomosu STEM Senior High School in the Eastern Region.

A video, which has gone viral on social media, captures galamsey operations occurring barely 100 metres from one of the school’s classroom blocks, sparking serious questions about student safety and the effectiveness of authorities.

In the footage, the unidentified parent, who recently enrolled his daughter at the school, expressed shock and frustration as he narrated the proximity of the mining site to the teaching and learning environment.

He questioned why no authority has intervened to stop the activity, warning that the ongoing operations could contaminate the school’s drinking water, food, and surrounding environment.

"There is serious galamsey at Abomosu STEM SHS, at the back of the school, where the students are staying and learning; the water that they drink, only God knows. This is where I brought my daughter, and the school authorities are not seeing this? NAIMOS, which is supposed to stop galamsey, are they not seeing this?" he asked.

Despite successive government efforts to curb illegal mining, galamsey continues to devastate lands and pollute water bodies, leaving communities and schools like Abomosu STEM SHS vulnerable to environmental and health risks.
