Supreme Court must dispel the mistrust it created for itself – Justice Abdulai

Private Legal Practitioner and Law Lecturer Justice Abdulai has asserted that the Supreme Court has a lot of work to do to dispel the level of mistrust it has created for itself.

During an interview on Joy News monitored MyNewsGh.com, Justice Abdulai expressed worry over the perception of Ghanaians towards the Supreme Court.

“The Supreme Court has a lot to do to dispel the level of mistrust and mischievous impression that it has created for itself. Perceptions really matter a lot,” he stated.

According to Justice Abdulai, aside from the Supreme Court soliciting opinions from stakeholders on their perception of the institution, the kind of pronouncement from the Supreme Court should resonate with Ghanaians.

He mentioned that Ghanaians see the Supreme Court and the Judiciary as biased and politically aligned with the ruling party and not the people.

Justice Abdulai expressed worry, describing their actions as a breed of mistrust.

“It is not healthy for our democracy. This should be a call and pick up the pieces and do things the way it is supposed to be. The court is the last place we can go when we have problems. So if the place is endangered, then we are all in a bigger problem”, he lamented.

The Supreme Court, on Tuesday, 12th November 2024, delivered a landmark judgment on the disputed decision by the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, to declare four parliamentary seats vacant.

The case was brought before the court by Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Majority leader, challenging Speaker Alban Bagbin’s declaration of four seats vacant, which was made without judicial oversight or the initiation of by-elections.
