Deputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party(NPP) Nana Obiri Boahen wants the largest opposition NDC to come clean about their participation in the voter registration exercise ahead of the December polls.
In an interview with Kasapa 102.5 FM, Obiri Boahen said:”they[NDC] should swallow their pride and tell the whole world that they have made a u-turn on it and now participating.”
He said it beats his imagination to see that their arch-rivals were present in the centres to participate in the Electoral Commission’s pilot voter registration exercise that began on Tuesday after boycotting several IPAC meetings held over the voter registration exercise and making it vividly clear to stay off.
Reacting to this, the Greater Accra Regional Organizer of the NDC, Anthony Nukpenu explained that their participation in the EC’s pilot registration was only to observe and apprise themselves with the system for a limited registration and not the Election Management Body’s (EMB’s) much-touted new voter registration.
“We have not made a u-turn neither have we rushed to go and do any registration. We don’t even believe the EC can go ahead with this new voter registration because they are not prepared from all indications. For us, we’re only getting prepared for limited registration.”
Pilot registration
The EC has begun the conduct of a two-day pilot registration exercise at all its regional offices to test the BVR kits, assess the protocols put in place, among other things.
Besides, it will later announce a date for a national pilot registration exercise at its head office in Accra.
Representatives of political parties are expected to be in attendance to observe the processes.
