Takoradi girls confirmed dead: The story has just begun - Dr Afoakwa

Head of Department of Forensic Sciences at the University of Cape Coast, Dr Richmond Afoakwa says the results of the DNA test in the Takoradi missing girls’ case does not bring the case to a close.

According to him, the work of the police has just begun as they need to connect the crime to the suspects who have been arrested.

“Four young girls have been murdered, suspects have been arrested. The police will need to connect the crime to the suspects, they need to have credible evidence to go to court with.”

He said the human remains being dug from one of the suspect’s residence is not enough to convict him of the crime.

Dr Afoakwa who was speaking on JoyNews’ 'PM Express' noted that to bring closure to the case, the CID must secure a conviction for whoever is responsible for the crime.

“What we have done now is began the case. We now know where the girls are… what happened to them, we don’t know. Who killed them, we don’t know. We have suspects but were they the ones who killed them, nobody knows. So the story is not over, we haven’t brought any closure to this case…”

Co-panellist on the show, Adam Bonaa said the police now have to put pieces together to determine where and when the girls were killed.

He also noted that police investigations must find out if more Ghanaians are being held captive in Nigeria as the suspects had initially claimed they sent the girls to a baby factory in the neighbouring country.

The Acting Inspector General of Police, James Oppong Boanuh on Monday announced that the DNA test carried out on the human parts found in the vicinity of the suspected kidnapper’s home confirmed they were that of the four girls who went missing in Takoradi.

The families of the girls and members of the general public had rejected the report saying the police has something to hide but the panellists on PM: express say the police would not have given that report if they indeed had something to hide.
