The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party, Bernard Antwi Boasiako popularly known as ‘Chairman Wontumi’, has criticised former President John Dramani Mahama, following the newly-refurbished Kumasi airport.
Speaking on GhOne TV in an interview with Serwaa Amihere, Chairman Wontumi stated that while Mahama had promised to build an airport for the Ashanti Region, he failed to complete the project before leaving office in 2016.
He described the state of the airport under Mahama's presidency as substandard, comparing it to a "kitchen" rather than a fully-functional airport.
“When Mahama was in power, he promised to build an airport for the Ashanti Region, but what he left behind was nothing like what we have today. The airport back then was like a kitchen, a place where we cook," Wontumi said in Twi, praising the Akufo-Addo-led NPP government for completing the project.
About the newly-refurbished Kumasi Airport
The newly upgraded Agyemang Prempeh I International Airport in Kumasi was officially inaugurated on May 10, 2024, with a ceremony marking its opening to the public.
Media outlets shared visuals of the airport's modern facilities, including newly installed equipment and sleek operational spaces designed to meet international standards.
The interior features glass walls on most staircases, adding a contemporary aesthetic to the airport's appeal.
Visitors are greeted by the sign "Nante Yie," meaning "Safe Journey," symbolising the welcoming nature of the new facility.
The airport is expected to boost the Ashanti Region's global profile and contribute significantly to the local economy by improving connectivity and fostering business opportunities.
