The Minister of Energy, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (commonly known as NAPO), has denied claims that there is load-shedding ongoing in the country.

According to him, the unplanned outages are due to various factors, including increased pressure from residential areas that have become business hubs, causing overloads on lines and transformers.

This comment came after the MP for South Dayi, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, questioned the Minister of Energy on whether the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) had been load-shedding power in the last couple of weeks, leading to the power outages experienced by many consumers.

Dafeamekpor asked, "If the answer is no, why the power outage then?"

In response, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh stated, “No, ECG is not undertaking load-shedding. As of the time the question was asked (which was two months ago), consumers were experiencing outages due to many factors, including localized outages caused by overloads on lines and transformers. Certain areas in this country, such as half of East Legon, which was purely residential, have now become major business districts, increasing power consumption and hampering the existing lines. Therefore, the existing lines need to be updated.”

He added that other factors included planned maintenance and requests by GRIDCo, which were not planned, hence there was no need for a load-shedding plan.
