Thousands wait to catch a final glimpse of Madiba

Thousands of people are already lining up outside the union buildings in Pretoria, as former President, Nelson Mandela lies in state for the final day.

Pretoria has been brought to a standstill for the past two days, with people queuing up for hours to view his body.

The procession left the 1 Military Hospital in Pretoria Friday morning, led by a public guard of honour. Security continues to remain tight in the surroundings of the union buildings.

There is a hive of activity outside the union buildings, with queues stretching for kilometers.

Everyone is hoping to make it before the final cut. Some have spent the night at most park and rides facilities, to avoid disappointment.

Statue grabs the attention of mourners

Those who live opposite the union buildings have also come out of their homes to form a public guard of honour leading to the union buildings. With thousands already lining up, it's yet to be seen whether everyone will make it before the- cut off time.

Traffic officers are towing vehicles that are alleged to have parked on designated areas at the Pretoria Events Center. Many slept at the center after they were turned away Thursday and Wednesday.

Meanwhile, a statue of the former president, is being erected at the center of Union Buildings.

The statue has grabbed the attention of mourners with some moving from the queues to witness the historic moment.

It is understood the statue will be officially unveiled by president Jacob Zuma on Monday the 16th, a day after Madiba is laid to rest.
