Residents of Salakope, Agavedzi and surrounding communities in the Ketu South Municipality of the Volta Region, are counting their losses after series of new tidal waves destroy their belongings.

The tidal waves distraction, which started on Thursday, January 16, has destroyed properties such as dwellings, fishing nets, canoes and other personal belongings in the area.

Mr Eben Asar, the Head of Assessment Members of the Salakope Electoral Area, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency, said over 100 residents were currently displaced by the new tidal waves.

“The tidal waves distraction started graduation on the 16th of this month, and as I am talking to you now, many other houses along the coast have been washed away and we are calling on the authorities to urgently help us,” he said.

He explained that the sea water had presently entered the houses of most people, and it could likely cross and cut-off the Keta-Aflao main road to enter the lagoon at the opposite side of the community, and the situation needed urgent attention.

Mr Asar said that the situation had been reported to the Ketu South branch of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), whilst the displaced victims had been advised to temporarily lodge with families and friends.

“Those displaced in the last tidal wave situation are also yet to receive any relief items and we are hoping that the authorities will hear our cry and address our current situation with all urgency,” he said.

Mr Asar stated that the current situation could be due to climate changes, while the sandbar that was cut some years ago at Havedzi to allow the lagoon water to flow into the sea due to the devastation caused by Akosombo dam spillage, could be another cause “since the sea is still removing unwanted waters and materials”.

He said the only option to save the areas from further tidal wave disasters was to construct a sea defense wall, to safeguard the people living along the coast.

Mr Asar appealed to philanthropists, government authorities, individuals and cooperate organisations to prioritise the construction of a sea defense wall, to save the rest of the people in the area.

Some victims who spoke to Ghana News Agency expressed worry about the situation and called on the government to assist in resolving the situation, to allow their economic and other activities to return to normalcy.
