The Interior Minister Mark Woyongo has admitted he is “shocked” over the alleged involvement of top police officer COP Patrick Timbillah in the recent police recruitment scam.

Speaking to Radio Ghana, Woyongo said he hopes the final investigations will exonerate the Director General in charge of Human Resource Development, who is currently on interdiction.

“I’m shocked and don’t expect him to go down at such level,” the interior minister opined.

Woyongo said he supports an independent probe into the scam that affected scores of unsuspecting victims throughout the country.

COP Timbillah was initially placed under house arrest following his interdiction.

A committee set up by the Police to investigate the scam traced a letter of the fraudulent recruitment to COP Timbillah, thus his arrest.

The investigations, according to Rev Ampah Benin, director general in charge of public affairs of the Ghana Police Service could be over in the next one week after which prosecutions will begin.

Seven people are already in police custody over the recruitment rip-off last weekend.

They include two police officers Constable Ruth Agyiri, 27, of the Central Police Station in Koforidua who allegedly swindled a victim of Ghc1,500, and Corporal Gideon Sarpong.

The others are a radio presenter of Silver Radio Amos Brown, 40, who according to the Director General of Public Affairs of the Ghana Police Service David Nenyi Ampah-Bennin, has taken various sum from over 40 persons to enlist them in the police service, Richard Harrison, 30, who lured others for over Ghc4,200, and a pastor Paul Danso.
