UEW Council pardons 3 sacked lecturers

Three Lecturers of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) who have been withdrawn from the University overstated misconduct, have been pardoned by the Governing Council of the University.

The three affected lecturers including Professor Ephraim Avea Nsoh, Dr. Emmanuel Osei Sarpong, and Dr. Frimpong Kwaku Duku, according to the Council were to resume their various ranks in the University from Thursday, April, 4th 2019.

The Governing Council in a statement signed by its Chairman, Professor Emmanuel Nicholas Abakah indicated that it had reviewed its disciplinary decisions of March 7, 2019, which affected the three lecturers and pardoned and reinstated them accordingly.

According to Professor Emmanuel Nicholas Abakah the Governing Council finds the state of affairs in the University very worrying since it is attracting negative reportage for the University on the media landscape, which does not augur well for institutional branding and development.

“The Governing Council acknowledges that it has the ultimate responsibility to ensuring that lasting peaceful environment for academic work is established on our campuses,” he stated. The Council has also upon advice and permission from the Regional Security Council announced arrangements for the re-opening of the University.

According to the Statement, students are to return to campus on Monday, 8th April, 2019 to undertake their Mid-Semester Examinations which comes off on Tuesday, April 9, 2019, to Friday, April 12, 2019.

Professor Abakah also stated that “The Governing Council further brings to the attention of the students Representative Council (SRC), the general student body, lecturers and staff of the University that on-campus-resident students will only be allowed into the halls of residence on the two campuses on April 8, 2019, and not earlier.”

The Governing Council said it has given the University Management and the Academic Board the task to review its Academic Calendar to cater for the loss of time and ensure that staff and students work collaboratively to return academic work to normalcy.

The Governing Council however expressed gratitude to the Minister for Education, Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh, the Minister for Tertiary Education, Professor Kwesi Yankah, the Central Regional Minister Central Regional Police Command, RESEC members, the University SRC, individuals and personalities who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure that normalcy returns to the two campuses for academic work to resume.
