NPP Communicator, Richard Ahiagble has called on the Governing Council of the University of Education (UEW) to thrash out differences in the administration of the school.
Students of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) are up in arms with school authorities over the dismissal of Dr. Frimpong Kaakyire Duku, the local President of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG).
According to reports, their dismissal was ordered by the Vice Chancellor, Reverend Father Prof Anthony Afful-Broni.
Following the kerfuffle on the campus of the University, the students on Thursday, March 14, 2019, demonstrated at the University’s north campus over what they say are the unjustified dismissal of a number of lecturers supervising students project work.
The Police reportedly fired warning shots to disperse the student demonstrators resulting in five female students being rushed to the hospital after sustaining injuries.
Addressing the issue on 'Kokrokoo' on Peace FM, the NPP Communicator has asked the authorities to take charge of the situation and bring calm on campus.
According to him, the "President has nothing to do with this issue" but rather the Governing Council will have to sit up.
"Let’s pray the Governing Council will sit up, and the local authorities who can talk for understanding to prevail should intervene,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Central Regional Minister, Kwamena Duncan in consultation with the Regional Security Council has directed for the University to be closed down indefinitely.
