Former President Jerry John Rawlings has called for the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Education-Winneba, Rev. Father Prof. Afful Broni to step aside immediately as he’s a subject of investigations.
According to Mr. Rawlings, it will be appropriate for the Council of the UEW to request that the VC steps aside for fairness to prevail as has been the practice with other similar circumstances in the past.
“I commend the government for their prompt intervention by laying a roadmap for the peaceful resolution of the matter after I expressed my initial concerns. From the records of EOCO and other state agencies, the affected individuals were exonerated as there was no evidence of misconduct established against them. Ironically, the current Vice-Chancellor who was invited in the same report still remains at post. No significant progress has been made after three whole months, more than 20 dismissed staffs at the UEW are going through discontent and pain. I also understand that there are ongoing investigations regarding the current Vice-Chancellor. it will be appropriate for the Council of the UEW to request that Prof. Afful Broni steps aside for fairness to prevail as has been the practice with other similar circumstances in the past.” ex-President Rawlings said while addressing a gathering at the 38th-anniversary celebration of the 31st December revolution held at Winneba on Tuesday, December 31, 2019.
The former Vice-Chancellor Professor Avoke was dismissed by the University Council following accusations of financial mismanagement.
However, a probe into the issues by the Economic and Organized Crime Office and National Security exonerated him.
The University has however refused to reinstate him as the President sworn in another Vice-Chancellor during the probe.
