The outgoing President of the Graduate Students Association of Ghana at the University of Ghana (GRASAG-UG), Sadick Abubakari, has donated a 30-seater Coaster bus to graduate students as part of his achievements in office.

He said the initiative was intended to ease transportation challenges faced by graduate students on campus and support their academic activities.

“Another achievement we were able to do, I was able to also procure a 30-seater Coaster bus for GED students, which is going to enhance their mobility. And it's the first of its kind because they've never had a bus before. This is the first time we've been able to push for them to get the 30-seater Coaster bus,” he said while addressing the media.

Abubakari also spoke about an accommodation project initiated by his administration, expressing hope that it would be completed in due course.

“Again, too, we have also been able to establish the project levy, where now we are going to start with a 2,000-bed capacity. Although we're able to cash out in our time, we believe that next month the third quarter will be done because before we are able to push and fast-track all the other documentation and are left with the procurement award of the contractor. Now we believe that one of the greatest achievements is seeing this edifice coming to fruition with the 2,000-bed capacity for ghetto students' accommodation,” he added.

The outgoing GRASAG-UG president also called for measures to ensure that student dues are fully released to student leadership rather than being channelled through the colleges, which he said would help accelerate their operations.

“One of the greatest challenges we've ever encountered is the financial challenge. In fact, when students pay the dues, they pay the dues as part of our school fees, and this goes to colleges. And if the colleges really invest in us with the dues for us to work and use that money to fund the students' welfare, we have to struggle, write letters, go and beg.

“We believe that we shouldn't fight and beg for what is due to the students and what is due to us. And we are pushing and proposing solutions to the Vice-Chancellor to assist student leaders in establishing what you call paying 100% of your dues in full in the first semester, so that student leaders can have this money to use, this money to be able to seek the welfare of the students,” he said.
